Description
Textile designs have always reflected the delicate sensibilities of the Japanese people to nature and the changing seasons. Snow (yuki) was an important symbol as a heavy fall would herald an abundance of water and a good rice harvest.
This traditional representation of snow first emerged during the Muromachi period (1392-1568), before the true structure of snowflakes was identified, and is worked with silver and gold metal threads on a background of heavy gold silk twill using Japanese goldwork techniques.
