Description

Stunning colours and beautiful perfume usually make flowers the most striking and desirable elements of garden plants but spectacular seed pods add interest and colour long after the blooms have faded.

Commonly known as honesty, Lunaria annua features racemes of white or mauve flowers but takes its name from the large, translucent, moon-shaped pods that remain on the stems through winter and provide seed for the next year.

Contrasting in form but equally handsome, the seed capsules of love-in-a-mist or Nigella damascene are surrounded by feathery foliage and follow flowers that feature blue, white or pink sepals encircling stamens and insignificant petals. Worked with wool and silk threads onto linen twill, this superb embroidery perfectly captures the unique beauty and diverse form of these garden favourites.
