What Are You Stitching?
4TH OCTOBER 2019 - ASU #206
Trish Burr is known the embroidery world over for her love and exquisite execution of needlepainting. Inspired by her work, this week we’re sharing some of the ‘paintings’ that have been created with needle and thread by the Inspirations Community…
Elaine Hearn
‘Whilst thinking about the story of my life, I decided it would be a great idea to bring it to life with my obsession – needlework! This is a photo of some of my favourite memories that I have been able to sketch and then sew.’
‘I had so much pleasure in doing this, that I started another – fashions from the 1950’s. Now it’s time to start on another creative piece.’
Elaine, we love that you’ve captured so much of your life in stitch! What a fabulous way to relive and record a life well lived.
Jean Dawes
‘Inspired by Cicely Mary Barker’s Flower Fairy illustrations, this is a birth celebration picture I recently designed and worked for my Dutch great-granddaughter. It is worked on fine cotton with single strands of DMC floss.’
Jean, Cicely’s illustrations have been the perfect inspiration for a charming birth celebration! We love the sense of whimsy you’ve captured in each dainty character and know it will be treasured by Emily for years to come.
Leigh Hutchinson
‘I really enjoy your newsletter and magazine and have completed many of the projects featured in them. I particularly like Trish Burr and Hazel Blomkamp. Whilst my daughter is not particularly interested in traditional needlework, she did ask me to stitch something modern for her!’
‘As well as Elvis Presley I have also completed Freddie Mercury. They were wonderful to stitch and now hang in pride of place at my daughter’s home. My next project is a 1966 Chevrolet Impala car inspired by Trish Burr’s VW Beetle. Thank you for the inspiration!’
Leigh, we love your modern application of needlepainting and can’t wait to see your Chevrolet Impala!
Margot Weich
‘I enjoy stitching so much and love that this creative art form has a lot of healing power for any bruised soul!
After suffering from chronic depression, stitching has kept me going and has been slowly healing me.
My first encounter with embroidery was in 1995 when I visited Vicky Padfield on the Isle of Arran in Scotland for an embroidery week holiday. That was the start of my recovery. I had done some stitching at school in the 1970s, but it was only after 1995 that I started stitching again.’
‘I have always admired Nettie Morris’s needlepainting and was fortunate enough to do a project with her in 2017, above is the project of hers that I have completed. Needless to say, I look forward to every Inspirations newsletter and magazine!’
Margot, we love that the therapeutic benefits of needle and thread have been a constant companion on your road to recovery. Your stitching is rich in colour, detail and carefully laid stitches.
Have your needles and threads painted a masterpiece? We’d love to see it. Email photos of your work of art to news@inspirationsstudios.com. Oh, and don’t forget to include a few details about your stitching journey as we always love to hear the why behind your what!
