What Are You Stitching?

Sandra Golbert

‘This is my second foray into stumpwork (what a glorious process).’

‘I also love embroidering tiny flowers with no set patterns or instructions. They're fun!’

Your stumpwork is beautiful, Sandra, with so much depth and texture to your piece there is lots for the eye to explore. We love your tiny, stitched flowers, they look beautifully organic.

Louise Desmarais

‘When my eldest granddaughter was 3 years old, she told me that her winter pants were ‘broken’ and that her mother would repair them by putting tape on them. I told her, well I will get a needle and thread, and I will repair your pants. And she watched me repairing her pants and she was very happy.

So happy that the next time I babysat her, the minute she got in the house, she said: ‘Grandma, let’s get your needle and thread and repair my coat.’

‘She is now 8 and has started sewing and embroidering with me. But occasionally she asks me to do miracles with her clothes. The last time, though, I decided to do more than the usual mending and to surprise her.’

‘With the inspiration from a book, I decided to create a little girl with pieces of fabric that matched her coat to form her clothes, felt for the shoes and embroidery stitches for the rest, I covered the mending and ornated her coat.

She was very surprised and happy with her ‘new’ coat.’

What a great story, Louise. Such a beautiful way to share the joy of needlework with your granddaughter while upcycling at the same time. Your wonderfully creative repair work has turned a damaged coat into a special one-of-a-kind garment that we’re sure your granddaughter will cherish.

Donna Carruth

‘The moment I saw Jewel of the Sea, I knew I had to make it. I selected materials that were close to the original.’

‘Having never made a 3D Goldwork piece, I was a bit nervous, but I stuck with it, followed the wonderful pattern and instructions and finished with pride. I absolutely love him!’

‘Thank you for such wonderful books and magazine! I look forward to every new release.’

Donna, you challenged yourself with a new technique and followed it through with amazing results - your Jewel of the Sea is superb. We know how challenging sourcing some of the materials for this project can be, so you’ve done very well with all your finds and selections.

Have you recently completed a stumpwork piece? Do you repair items for your loved ones? Or have you stitched a 3D project?
