What Are You Stitching?

Jillian Dellit

‘I made Floe for a penguin-loving friend in Sydney, but instead of stopping the door, she is partying with her newfound friends.’

Thank you Jillian, what a wonderful way to see Floe - hanging out in Sydney with all her festive friends! You’ve done a terrific job stitching and constructing her. We love seeing how much care and thought goes into recreating the projects we publish, and the different applications everyone comes up with for their final pieces are always inspiring.

Carolee Withee

‘It’s that season where many grandmothers receive holiday pins from their loving grandchildren, and as we can’t throw them out, the pins are probably stored in a drawer once the celebration days are over.’

‘My idea was to make a tiny Crazy Quilt foundation for old pins, and then hang the display each holiday season. Each year, the grandchildren can see the pins they’ve previously gifted.’

22.jpg

‘My Crazy Quilt foundation measure 9 x 11 inches, and I’m using common pins to hang them on my wallpapered wall.

My grandmother, who embroidered from the early 1920s until the 1980s, would be amazed at the many different types of needle art shown in your publication, and I love reading each weekly issue of the All Stitched Up! newsletter.’

Honouring the gifts our loved ones have thoughtfully chosen for us is such a wonderful inspiration for a new project Carolee. We love the idea of not only giving your grandchildren’s pins a new life, but also the fact they get to see them each year.

Hearing about your grandmother’s passion for embroidery is a great reminder as to how often these skills are passed down through generations and leave us with many fond memories of our loved ones.

Therese Parry

‘My mother-in-law was gifted this piece many years ago by a friend who purchased it from a garage sale as a ‘bag of beads’. After examining it and observing the exquisite workmanship and the many hours that must’ve gone into creating it, a small glass table was made to display it.’

24.jpg

We agree Therese, this piece is exquisite and I’m sure we can all appreciate the hours that went into creating such an intricate piece.

Therese has also asked us to put a call-out to our community…

‘I would be fascinated to know if anyone can tell me what type of work this is and what the cultural origins are. Incredibly, it’s made from strings of tiny beads and is very heavy!’

Therese, incredibly generously, would also like to donate this piece (and the accompanying glass display table) to an embroidery or beadwork museum but hasn’t yet found the right place.

If anyone can make any recommendations for Therese, who is based in Victoria, Australia, we would love to pass them onto her. Email us news@inspirationsstudios.com
