What Are You Stitching?

29TH SEPTEMBER 2023 - ASU #398

Needle and thread bring joy to so many households across the world. While we may not know where each of us live, there’s every chance quite a few people in your neighbourhood are stitchers themselves. This week, we share the work of stitchers who could just be one of your neighbours!

Lynda Douglas

‘I love bumblebees, so I’ve attempted to capture the beauty and fluffiness of one through needle and thread.’

‘I’ve also been interested in butterflies and thought you’d like to see my progress…you can tell which one was my first attempt! Hope you like them!’

So many beautiful insects, Lynda, we love them! We definitely think you have captured the fluffiness of the bumblebee with stitch and the colours you’ve used for the shading in your butterflies is spectacular.

Teresa

‘I have just completed a project that is unlike anything I’ve ever done before. Typically, I work from a pattern however this time, I made my own pattern because of a conversation a friend and I had. I often show her pictures of embroidery that impresses me, and we were talking about the multi-layered/multi-hooped koi ponds that I had seen online. In that conversation we kicked around some ideas for a project we’d like to tackle.’

‘Well, it took me about a week to plan it out and complete it, and though I still have a lot to learn about doing this kind of project, I’m pretty pleased with how it turned out.

It doesn't have a title as yet, but it is of an untethered astronaut done in tulle across five hoops.

My husband spray painted the hoops silver for me and I worked in regular DMC cotton floss. Thanks for always creating a warm and supportive environment!’

Out of this world, Teresa! Challenging yourself and then stitching an amazing outcome would have been so rewarding, you should be so proud. We love how you have created the layering effect across different hoops stacked together, we hope to see more creative projects from you using the same technique, it’s fabulous!

Rayne van Sing

‘I started stitching during the pandemic, doing small samplers and rounds. I paint on silk and like to do my own designs and add layers.  I enjoy doing trees on my Elna sewing machine and the rest, flowers, grasses etc., by hand.’

‘I live in Spain but up a mountain, a long way from any sewing groups so online has, for me, been a lifeline.’

Rayne, your pieces are beautiful, the detail and colours that you have used make them fabulously unique. Also, we love that you have overcome your distance barrier and found a community online to share your passion for needle and thread. We’re so glad you can join us each week and thank you for contributing to All Stitched Up!

Have you stitched any critters recently? Have you tried layering a design with stacked hoops? Do you have another method for creating layers in your work?

Whatever you are stitching, we’d love to see it! Email photos of what you’ve created with needle and thread along with a few details about your stitching journey to news@inspirationsstudios.com
