Remember Me by Kim Beamish
6TH SEPTEMBER 2024 - ASU #443
Have you ever come across an embroidery design that you’ve fallen in love with and then learned the back story to its origin, only to fall even deeper in love?
That was certainly the case for us when Kim Beamish sent in her latest piece Remember Me for inclusion in our Handpicked Collection 3.
In fact, Remember Me is a story in three parts for our team at Inspirations Studios…
Part One | Thrill-Seeking
There is nothing quite like admiring a traditional Hardanger piece that has been created using cutwork.
We call this the thrill-seeking technique of embroidery.
If you’re ever after a quick hit of adrenaline while you’re stitching, cutwork is calling your name.
As a result, whenever we have the privilege of publishing a project that features cutwork, it’s like an unspoken code that we all tilt our hats in respect, as was the case when Kim sent in Remember Me.
SIDE NOTE – Don’t let this put you off trying to re-create this piece or attempting cutwork! It’s an incredibly satisfying process that yields spectacular rewards.
Part Two | The Backstory
After we acknowledged Kim’s cutwork artistry, we then read the backstory to this piece.
Inspired by a piece of vintage Hardanger found at an estate sale and worked by an unknown hand, Kim has re-stitched the spectacular star design, originally worked onto 60-count linen, using a more manageable 28-count fabric.
It’s fascinating to think that someone in the past picked up their needle and thread and created a piece of Hardanger that, who knows how many years later, found its way into the hands of Kim Beamish, who then re-created the piece using her own interpretation and here we all are today, talking about it.
We also love how the name of the project reflects its provenance.
Makes you wonder what stories the piece of embroidery you’re working on right now might have to tell one day in the future!
Part Three | Photography
Often when writing about a project we’ve published, we’ll talk about the joy associated with re-creating the piece for yourself. After all, needlework is a participation sport and stitching is what we’re all about.
You may also be interested to know that great joy also abounds for our photography team when they capture these remarkable pieces of stitched art in the best way possible.
In particular, we love the photography and the styling for Remember Me as it looks so inviting and warm.
Our favourite shot is the mat hanging on the line in the sun.
It showcases the needlework so elegantly and the image alone somehow just makes you want to stitch it!
The finished design measures 33.5cm (13 ¼”) square and at this point we’d like to thank Kim for creating this gorgeous design that is so intriguing and captivating.
