Printed Fabric Panels to Embellish

20TH OCTOBER 2023 - ASU #401

Over the past few years there has been an increasing number of needlework artists who create projects with a printed or painted image on the ground fabric that they then embellish.

Jo Butcher paints her own backdrops and then stitches mesmerising scenes on top, Di van Niekerk picks a favourite image from an antique book or the like and adds her own beauty with silk ribbon embellishments, while Nicola Jarvis has a series of designs that begin with a printed image that is then enhanced with embroidery. Even some of Margaret Lee’s bead embroidered projects begin with the motif hand painted onto the fabric.

This week we’re giving you the opportunity to embrace this style of needlework yourself with the release of 3 stunning printed fabric panels featuring images from Australian wildlife artist Natalie Jane Parker.

You can choose from a Rose Robin, White Plumed Honeyeater, or a Zebra Finch with each panel measuring 33.5 cm (13”) square and printed on 100% cotton fabric.

Bring each scene to life with as much or as little embroidery as you like.

With so many different techniques, threads, beads and more that you can use to make each project your own, these designs are ideal for utilising materials from your existing stash. They can also play the role of a sampler where you experiment with new stitches, ideas or colour combinations to your heart’s content.

We look forward to seeing what you come up with!
