Little Flying Things by Carolyn Stanton
14TH MARCH 2025 - ASU #467
Here’s something fun - a fluttering, buzzing and felt-tastic adventure!
From the same brilliant creative mind that brought us Floe the Fairy Penguin, Carolyn Stanton is back and this time with a whole parade of fabulous felt creatures for us to enjoy.
Little Flying Things from Inspirations magazine issue #125 is an enchanting children’s mobile that brings a collection of bright and fun handcrafted flying insects into the nursery.
This whimsical piece is a celebration of nature’s tiniest aviators, each created from soft wool felt and embellished with embroidery.
Meet ten of the most charming, winged friends you’ve ever seen, all of which are sure to spark curiosity and wonder.
Our parade begins with a kaleidoscope of butterflies starting with a majestic Monarch butterfly and a brilliant blue Ulysses then moving onto the cabbage butterfly and a purple butterfly.
A green leaf insect joins the gang to add a bit of intrigue and mystery while the dragonfly zips along with shimmering wings.
Of course, our collection wouldn’t be complete without some classic favourites… two ladybirds bring their signature spots, one large and one small and one big and one little bumblebee add a dose of bizzy-buzzy charm.
Carolyn has done a superb job designing and creating each insect to ensure they are all irresistibly cute and packed with personality.
The colour palette she has used is equally striking with felts ranging from bright apple and grass greens to vivid tomato red, magenta, and chick yellow for the more flamboyant flyers.
Not to be outdone, the embroidery threads Carolyn chose also rise to the occasion with a selection of DMC, Sue Spargo and Painters Threads in shades of riptide, go getter, Picasso and Van Gogh just to name a few.
Stitches such as blanket stitch, French knots, chain stitch, and Palestrina stitch create intricate wing veins, bold spots, and playful textures, enhancing each insect’s lifelike charm.
To help ensure our little flyers always stay in perfect formation, weighted felt leaves are cleverly incorporated beneath each insect.
These weighted elements help balance the mobile, keeping the creatures delicately suspended and preventing tangling.
Once completed, all the elements of the mobile are suspended from a covered bamboo ring allowing these felt friends to gently hover and sway the days and nights away.
Perfect for welcoming a new little one into the world, Little Flying Things is a charming, hand-stitched tribute to nature as these sweet, winged companions take flight and bring a flutter of joy to any nursery.
