Fly me to the Moon by Trish Burr

7TH FEBRUARY 2025 - ASU #462

In 2015 Paul McCartney (as in Beatles’ fame Sir Paul McCartney) surprised many by collaborating with some of the biggest chart-topping superstars of the day to release new music together.

These collaborators were many years his junior as Paul was 73 at that time.

When a teenager heard one of these new songs, they commented on how good this newcomer Paul McCartney guy was and predicted he might have a promising career ahead of him, blissfully unaware of Paul’s existing iconic status.

Fly me to the Moon from Inspirations magazine issue #125 is a magnificent moth in resplendent shades of winter white, teal, Jacobean green and golden brown. It features striking wings ornamented with flowers and edged with leaves.

This is a fresh and modern piece that is undeniably crisp and vibrant.

If you had never heard of Trish Burr before and came across this piece, you could easily think it was created by some newcomer, a hip and young designer with a break-out project on their hands who has a bright future ahead of them.

And that is exactly what seasoned artists who are at the top of their game are capable of – continually creating new work that is relevant and on trend, never resting on their laurels.

We have been publishing projects by Trish Burr starting as far back as Inspirations magazine issue 47, some 19 years ago now.

You can see how Trish’s designs have evolved over time by checking out this impressive collection of Trish Burr projects that we’ve published HERE.

It’s no surprise that Trish remains one of the most prolific designers in the embroidery world today and is showing no signs of slowing down.

Which is just as well, as her work keeps getting more and more beautiful.

Fly me to the Moon measures 8.5cm x 15cm and is stitched in Trish’s trademark technique, whitework with colour.

With the years of experience and talent that Trish has accumulated, she has the ability to create a magnificently rich and seemingly complex piece like this, using only eight different stitches and one size needle.

Fly me to the Moon also forms part of a companion trio of charming creatures you can put together including a bumblebee, a ladybird, and now this fabulous moth.

Congratulations Trish on your remarkable legacy of filling the world with more and more beautiful needlework. Thank you for yet another stunning project that no doubt many people the world over will receive great joy in re-creating themselves.
