Changing Colour by Colleen Goy
9TH AUGUST 2024 - ASU #439
An artistic expression can serve many purposes, from offering a creative interpretation as to how an artist sees the world, developing an artform with the sole purpose of adding beauty, through to re-creating a magnificent vista or capturing a specific moment in time.
Autum or fall is without doubt one of the most magical times of the year, when Mother Nature puts on a resplendent display for us all to enjoy that appears on repeat every 12 months.
If there ever was an event or moment in time that is worth capturing and celebrating by way of an artistic expression, autumn is surely a compelling candidate.
South African designer Colleen Goy certainly thinks so and as such she has created the gorgeous piece Changing Colour which features in Inspirations magazine issue #123.
As leaves from deciduous trees lose their summer colour and turn from vibrant green to endless shades of red, orange and yellow, they form a striking display against the bright blue sky.
Colleen has captured a little of this miraculous change with a charming group of leaves falling from perhaps a maple tree, as they tumble down to rest on the earth below.
Worked with hand-dyed silk and stranded cotton threads onto cream silk, Changing Colour is a beautiful reminder of this amazing transformation.
We love the thread selections Colleen has chosen for this piece with over 30 spectacular hues across a mixture of stranded cotton and silks, filament silks and variegated cottons.
You’ll be transported to an autumnal wonderland even before you begin your first stitch just by reading through the list of threads you’ll be using.
Amber, gold rush, sunflower, maple, desert canyon and Chilean sunset are but a few of the striking colours that play a role in bringing together this threadpainted work of art, that elegantly and comprehensively achieves its intended purpose of paying homage to autumn.
With the finished design measuring 17cm x 15cm wide (6 ¾” x 6″) Changing Colour allows us all to enjoy and appreciate the aura of autumn magic all year round.
