Artichoke & Persimmons by Anna Scott
1ST NOVEMBER 2024 - ASU #452
Every needlework project is like embarking on a different adventure.
Whether you use the analogy of watching a movie or reading a novel, some projects are action packed, some more on the romance side, others a period piece and then there are the thrillers!
If Anna Scott were an author or movie producer, her project Artichoke & Persimmons from The Handpicked Collection 3, would be akin to an enthralling historical drama, full of intrigue and romance.
Artichoke & Persimmons is a sophisticated crewelwork design, featuring a handsome artichoke, persimmons, small flowers and bold leaves all worked onto linen twill with traditional English crewel wool.
Stitched in gentle shades of honeysuckle, iron grey and Jacobean green, the symmetrical design flows out from the central motif on graceful, scrolling stems.
Closing with a zipper at the back, the cushion is edged with a braid formed from the same threads that finishes with a tassel at each corner.
The finished cushion measures 41.5cm (16 ⅜") square and is created exclusively using 18 different shades of Appletons crewel wool.
This is a classic Anna Scott project and a classic crewel embroidery design – a real period piece.
Featuring 25 different stitches to keep you engaged at every piercing of the needle, there’s plenty of twists and turns to keep you intrigued.
Finally, the colour palette Anna has chosen is replete with soft hues such as autumn yellow, honeysuckle, China blue and heraldic gold, all of which bring the romance in spades.
Next time you’re looking for a period piece with a bit of drama, intrigue and romance, Artichoke & Persimmons is most definitely where it’s at!
If you prefer to source the materials yourself, this project is part of our Handpicked Collection 3, with instructions included in the printed book and available separately as a printed or digital pattern.
