What Are You Stitching?

‘I thought you might like to see my latest piece. This Barred Owl is all done by hand in single threads of DMC and Anchor stranded cottons, I drew it from a photograph. He is eight inches tall, and I ‘upcycled’ an old shirt of my husband’s for the fabric.’

‘I like to start with the eyes when working on birds and animals, I think if I cannot get the eyes right all the effort would be wasted.’

You were right, Sue, we very much did want to see your latest piece! Your Barred Owl is very handsome, and the eyes are beautiful. You have done a wonderful job!

‘Over a number of years, I have embroidered decorations, some of my own design, some from Trish Burr’s designs, a number of kits from Inspirations, Jenny McWhinney and Alison Cole.’

‘I like to think they reflect my progress with embroidery.

In the past I have displayed these on eucalypt branches. But inspired by photos of Christmas baubles piled in bowls and baskets I have done the same thing with my embroideries. Most are in a basket with artificial pine, lights and gold beads.’

‘You might also be able to see some other little creatures as well!’

You have quite the collection, Kathryn! Each of your decorations has been stitched immaculately and finished to perfection. And we love how you’ve displayed them, so much stitching joy in one basket!

‘All my work shares its inspiration from embroidery stitches using various textured threads to draw the viewer in for a closer look.’
